The Blessing of the Veneration Cross

was at St Andrews Episcopal Church

I walked in with it covered with a red drape.

It was then uncovered

Blessed

then Covered again.

It will be used for the Good Friday Service

at St. Andrews Episcopal Church

in Emporia, Kansas

I am holding the Veneration Cross.

WHAT DOES A GRANDFATHER WOODCARVER DO WITH HIS GRANDCHILDREN?

Grandpa went to the Grandchildrens to visit with them.
However, being a woodcarver, as they were playing outside

Grandpa found some branches.

He just had to see what he could do with the branches.

The grandchildren watched with amazement.

Pretty flowers were beginning to take shape.

What a surprise, even to Grandpa!

The center of the flowers were an orange tint.

The branches were from an osage orange tree.

Grandpa walks to the school bus stop 3 days a week
to meet the 2 younger grandchildren on the bus.
They bring home pine cones, flowers and anything else
that they find on their walk to Grandpa and Grandma's.
Jared found a box cutting blade - rusted - not worth anything.

He was so excited that he had his own woodcarving knife.
And, of course, Grandpa to the Rescue!
Grandpa cleaned up the blade,
filed the sharp edge off
and . . . . .
made a handle for Jared's first woodcarving knife -
after all, he found the blade for it.

took quite a while,

so Jared was looking at the scrap wood that

Grandpa had.
(After all, the grandchildren do NOT get to spend time in

Grandpa's woodcarving room.

Too many sharp tools!)

All of a sudden . . . .

"Grandpa, look! Here is a cow feeder"

Grandpa was impressed with Jared's immagination,

so they made legs for it

out of craft sticks.

Aw! The new carving knife is finished.

Now, for some carving.

Yes, Jared is a beginner - a bar of soap will be used.

Grandpa had to give full instructions about holding the
knife and holding the soap. What a little listener! 4






3"Yippee! It is my turn."
Grandpa was making sure the knife was held correctly
and with his left thumb in place, he was ready to begin with the carving.




Careful attention from Grandpa and . . . Yes, Jared was
pushing the blade of the knife correctly with his left
thumb. Great job! 4





The other grandchildren had to try this too.

Jacey, Joshua and Jacob are now carving

their bars of soap.

What a fun time! Bars of soap!

And yes - table knives.
Table knives carve soap also.

One resembled a gun, the others were blobs with the edges carved off - but they each have taken a bath with their carving the past couple of nights.
Great soap for baths!

This roughout is based on my Santa Face, which I use for my classes. Buy a roughout and you will not have to start from scratch like we do in my classes.

This roughout makes the carving go quicker and will be easier, but still offers you the versatility to carve the mustache and mouth in several different ways, the eyes can be carved to express several different emotions and also the hat tassel and ball can be placed on either side.

Thoughts from Woodcarver Millard Harrell

"Well, after carving Santa's for several month, it is nice to carve something else for a change. Here are two wood spirits I have carved recently for collectors. I'm always happy to oblige collectors that want wood spirits with special themes.

One of the Bark Carvings is a wood spirit with a Kansas Sunflower theme.

The other is a Nordic mythological theme featuring Odin and Thor.

At the top of the Odin and Thor wood spirit is the symbol for Odin's horse with eight legs. Working our way down, we have Odin with the rune symbols, Alpha on the left and Omega on the right side of his helmet.

The Odin rune is embedded in his beard and then on the left, are the very mystical words written in rune symbols, "Kansas Bark". (smile) Odin's son, Thor, is next with his hammer. At the bottom are the rune symbols that spell out his name, "Thor".

You will notice that these wood spirits have a scorched appearance. This is because I harvest almost all of my bark from Cottonwood trees that have been struck by lightening, giving the spirits "special powers". (grin)"

Every year that I make a new Santa for my Santa Series

the first Santa - the Original - is for my wife,

Onnalee.

which will in time be for our son's,

Kelby Harrell.

The #1 Santa is for our daughter, Gwen Stutler.

The Santa's this year were not numbered on the back of the carvings,
as #2 through #46 were for ETC in Elkhart, Ks.

One Santa for Norma Williams - Canton, OH
