AN ORIGINAL DEEP PIERCED RELIEF CARVING

.
A deep pierced relief carving carved from a mahogany blank.

The original drawn pattern by Millard Harrell, woodcarver.

Carving almost completed - before the final shaping of the anchor.

A Pierced Relief Carving

The anchor is an emblem of a well grounded hope and a well-spent life.
It is emblematic of that Anchor which shall safely moor us in a peaceful Harbor where the wicked cease from troubling and the weary shall find rest.
The Saint Andrew Cross in the background is a reminder of the humility exhibited by St. Andrew upon his crucifixion and also our continued support of one another as we face our futures together in St. Andrew's Parish.

“Saint Andrew mot us speed.”

Congratulations to my husband
(Millard Harrell)

The 2014 Fall Issue of the Woodcarving Illustrated magazine (Fox Chapel Publishing Co.) with his article “Carve a Welcoming Wood Spirit” AND with a picture of his Wood Spirit is on the front cover.  Wow!  What an honor!

Last page of article - page 43

He received an email from Woodcarving Illustrated in June  stating that they were getting the 2014 Fall Issue ready and Millard’s wood spirit instructional article would be in that magazine.
From Bob Duncan . .
.
“Hi Millard,
We're finishing up preparing the article for our art department (we're planning on putting it in the Fall issue). As Mindy's making the final pass over the article, she commented that "Millard's instructions and photos are crazy good. We need more stuff from him."

So... I'm reaching out to see if and what you'd be interested in doing an article on for 2015. Furthermore, would you be interested in coming to our open house/woodworking show in 2015 (May 8-9) and teaching a class in facial anatomy?”

That folks is a prestigious honor in the field of woodcarving.  Millard is highly recognized nationally for his facial expressions – especially the eyes.

Millard did an article on carving Santa’s in the Holiday edition of Woodcarving Illustrated in 2010.
The news about it was on Millard’s Foundwood Carving blog.

BOOBY SUE

Always Keep an Eye on Your Husband

A note from The Woodcarver's (Millard Harrell) wife . . . .

Well, Millard did it. He carved something that I didn’t know he was carving until it was almost done. He just said he was carving a “gag gift” or a “booby prize.”
A few nights ago, he brought it up to get my opinion. I couldn’t believe m
y eyes. I told him to get it finished and get it out of here as soon as he possibly could. (grin)
He had it finished last night and the grandchildren came in. Josh (13 yrs old) went down stairs and when he came up he was grinning. I said, “Well, what did you think of Bobby Sue?” He laughed and said, “Grandma, I didn't know you could carve things like that but if I could wood carve that is exactly what I would want to carve.” Jacob (age 12) & Jared (age 10) both just shook their heads and didn’t have anything to say. Jacey (9 yrs old) came up and said, “Grandma, Grandpa needs to put straps on it in the back. She is going to lose it all if he doesn’t. You need to go tell him.” Gwen's comment (our daughter) was . . . . "Did they tell you that was what they wanted?" Not!
When they left, Millard came up and said that Jacey was really beside herself and that "Bobby Sue really needed straps on her back. She insisted on me doing it. I couldn’t do it because it was completely finished.”
Millard took it to work the next morning and sold it immediately. That was the quickest he has ever sold a wood carving. He was just lucky. LOL!
I say “Bobby Sue” but for the last few days it has been “Booby Sue.”
